The Great Awakening
A couple weeks ago I posted an article on the early Methodist preacher George Whitefield. That article mentioned Whitefield's role in the First Great Awakening. This period (1730s-1740s) was a time of spiritual revitalization that made its way around the colonies. Preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield were referred to as "new lights." because they preached in a radically different manner than did other more traditional preachers of the day. One of the fall-outs of this was that people began to study the Bible at home...imagine that! More information on the First Great Awakening including the source text for this article can be found here.
